A Hostile environment can be a Workplace, a home, an academic institution or any place of living, work and learning. It is one where people cannot do their best work or be most productive due to conditions that imprison their potential or threaten their physical safety and welfare. In essence, a hostile environment is hostile to our natural humanity. The threats that such an environment poses include hostility toward the company’s productivity, which directly impacts on profits in a negative way. People who are unhappy, unhealthy or angry do not work hard.

A hostile workplace is the result of intimidation and suppression of people’s natural ability to express themselves since it does not promote creativity and vitality. Hostile workplaces are deadly to productivity, unhealthy to prosperity and potentially deadly - to the people who work in them. This is because the leads to acts of violence against persons or property, threats, intimidation, harassment, or other inappropriate, disruptive behaviours cause fear for personal safety in that hostile environment. Hostile environments can affect or involve employees, visitors, contractors, and other non-related family members.

David had found himself caught up in a hostile environment for a job he was both called and qualified to do. Having escaped from the death traps of Saul, he made an advance for his survival by keeping his focus on his dream. In a hostile environment keep your dream alive if you want to survive. A dream is an “ambition: a cherished desire; imaginative thoughts indulged in while awake; a state of mind characterized by abstraction and release from reality.” ¹

A dream is a visionary creation of the imagination. Your dreams often contain valuable information that will help you to understand yourself and your world much better. Your dream defines your life. Chances are that if you have a job, you have a boss and colleague to work with. You might be favoured to work with nurturing and supportive bosses or colleagues; then, count yourself favoured. But there are some who are struggling like David to keep a work relationship that resembles a good day. Since bosses are only human, a “perfect” boss is as impossible to imagine as a “perfect” person. Therefore if you are caught up in the mesh of hostility to survive, keep your dream alive. A hostile environment could possibly happen to anyone, anywhere. When confronted with any, be ready to survive beyond any event. To survive means to remain alive; to live. Survival is taking any given circumstance, accepting it, and trying to improve it, while sustaining your life until you can get out of the situation. And most importantly, survival is a state of mind.

Keep your dreams alive with your integrity. Integrity comprises the personal inner sense of “wholeness” deriving from honesty and consistent uprightness of character. The etymology of the word relates it to the Latin adjective integer (bringing several separate elements into a whole, complete). Integrity connotes strength and stability.² It means taking the high road by practicing the highest business ethics and professional standards.
